University Laboratory School

Elementary School Principal

The University Laboratory School Elementary Principal is responsible for the effective management of programs, personnel, materials, and facilities for the purpose of developing an optimum learning climate for the unique needs of the Elementary Division of a collaborative K-12 demonstration school. This position shall plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate functions of the overall management and leadership of the elementary division, and be responsible for the elementary division's operation within financial limitations. Reports to the Associate Director of Academic Programs & Services and Chief Administrative Officer.

Responsibilities

40% Administration & Supervision: Maintains a safe, secure, clean, and aesthetically pleasing physical setting; Establishes and/or implements laws, policies, regulations, and procedures that promote effective school operations; Maintains a positive school environment where proper student discipline is the norm; Manages and monitors fiscal resources responsibly, efficiently, and effectively; Manages human resources responsibly and appropriately by participating in the selection and induction of personnel, & assigning and evaluating all staff effectively; Monitors components such as transportation, food, health, and extended care responsibly; Provides and coordinates appropriate co-curricular and extra-curricular activities; Uses shared decision making effectively in the management of the school; Supervises all assigned personnel; Maintains a visible and accessible presence in the school; Protects instructional time when scheduling events and communication efforts; Ensures that school facilities are conducive to a positive school environment; Plans, prepares, and distributes student and faculty information; Responsible for graduation and/or closing of school activities (if/when applicable).

20% Academic Mission/Vision: Works collaboratively with the school community to develop and maintain a shared vision; Brings the school vision to life by using it to guide decision-making about students and instructional programming; Maintains faculty focus on developing learning experiences that will enable students to prosper in subsequent grades and as adults; Maintains open communication with the community, and effectively conveys high expectations for student learning; Provides opportunities and support for collaboration, the exchange of ideas, experimentation with innovative teaching strategies, and ongoing school improvement; Monitors, assesses, and revises school practice to meet the school vision and goals as needed; Recognizes, models, and promotes effective teaching strategies that enable students to apply what they learn to real world experiences; Encourages and supports the use of both innovative, research-based teaching strategies to engage students actively in solving complex problems and methods of student assessment which will enhance learning for all students; Conducts frequent classroom visits and periodic observations, provides constructive feedback to faculty, and suggests models of effective teaching techniques when needed; Fosters a caring, growth-oriented environment for faculty and students, one in which high expectations and high standards for student achievement are emphasized; Promotes collaboration and team building among K-12 faculty.

20% Professional Development & School Improvement: Provides ongoing opportunities for staff to reflect on their roles and practices in light of student standards and school goals; Grows professionally by engaging in professional development activities and making such activities available to others; Facilitates school-based research and uses these and other research findings to plan school improvement initiatives, pace the implementation of these changes, and evaluate their impact on teaching and learning; Fosters the genuine continuous involvement and commitment of the school community in promoting the progress of all students toward attaining high standards; Enhances school effectiveness by appropriately integrating the processes of teacher selection/evaluation and professional development with school improvement; Communicates a focused vision for both school and individual professional growth; Uses research and data from multiple sources to design and implement professional development activities; Secures the necessary resources for meaningful professional growth, including the time for planning and the use of emerging technologies; Provides opportunities for individual and collaborative professional development; Provides incentives for learning and growth and encourages participation in professional development activities at the local, state, and national levels.

10% Community Relations: Is visible and involved in the community and treats members of the school community equitably; Involves the school in the community while keeping the school community informed; Uses school-community resources to enhance the quality of school programs, including those resources available through research, business, and industry; Recognizes and celebrates school successes publicly; Communicates effectively, both interpersonally and through the media.

10% Other Duties As assigned; Attend events and serve as administrator on duty, which at times, will involve extended work hours and nights/weekends.

Minimum Requirements:

Master's Degree in Education or related field of study with 10 years of successful classroom teaching and/or school administrative experience

Minimum Certifications/Licenses:

Must possess, or meet the requirements to possess, an Educational Leader Certificate Level 1 (EDL 1) and/or school principal certification in the State of Louisiana

Additional Information

This position is classified as a safety and security-sensitive position. These positions are subject to drug screens per PS-67/FASOP HR-04.

This position is considered operational essential and may be asked to work during an official closure but is otherwise not required to report to the physical campus during a closure and whose absence does not present a risk to the safety, resources, and well-being of the campus per FASOP HR-01.

This position regularly engages in financial matters including handling credit cards, cash, grant funds, or other university funds, and must undergo a credit check per FASOP HR-04.

As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
